The 7 Pillars of Self-Care at Work

One of the biggest mistakes I believe we make in society is confusing who we are with what we do and allowing what we do to determine our value in the world.

 

This type of mentality is embed in us from the moment someone asks "What do you want to be when you grow up?"

 

Society pressures us to pick a college major and have our entire careers mapped out by the time we're 18 — still babies just starting to figure out who we are.

 

While we should definitely set goals, there's very little wiggle room to change our minds and follow our passions as we get clear on our own identities — and the effects are seen all around us. Men believe their worth is based on the size of their paychecks and women believe their worth is based on how much they sacrifice.

This is a one-way track toward a mid-life crisis... or a mid-life revolution.

Society may teach us that who we are is shaped by what we do, but I 

believe that what we do should be a reflection of who we are. From Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to Oprah to the Kardashians, some of the most successful people on Earth that we love (or love to hate) have careers that are birthed from having a true, solid understanding of who they are.
